Send SMS/voice alerts from Liebert Nform

Liebert Nform alerts reach the person on duty as an SMS or a phone call. SMSEagle sends them over its own cellular connection, so they don’t depend on internet access or a cloud service.

Uses Nform email actions

Nform already sends email notifications for its alarms. Add SMSEagle as a recipient and the alarm becomes an SMS, with no extra software to install.

Alerts don't need internet

SMSEagle sends the alert through its own SIM card, so an internet outage won’t stop it, as long as Nform and SMSEagle are on the same local network.

No per-message fees

SMSEagle sends SMS through a regular SIM card, so you only pay for your mobile plan.

How it works

1

Alarm event

Liebert Nform detects an event, for example a UPS on battery, and its E-Mail Action sends a notification to the recipients configured for that action.

2

Email to SMSEagle

That e-mail notification is addressed to SMSEagle instead of (or alongside) a person, so it lands directly on SMSEagle’s Email-to-SMS plugin.

3

SMS & voice alert

SMSEagle delivers the alert over its own cellular connection, not through a third-party service, as an SMS or a phone call to the recipient’s phone.

Set up in about 10 minutes

No custom scripting or middleware needed. Add SMSEagle’s address as an e-mail recipient in a Liebert Nform Action, and UPS or environmental alarms are texting your team in a few minutes.

SMSEagle sends Liebert Nform alerts to the right person by SMS or phone call, day and night.

An SMS followed by a phone call

After the SMS with a Liebert Nform alert, SMSEagle can also call: a ring-only call or a call that reads the alert aloud. You set it once in the Email to SMS rule.

Fill-in-the-call-60

If the first person doesn't respond, the alert is sent to the next

Escalation groups and shift schedules make sure the Liebert Nform alert reaches the person on duty, and the next person on the list if nobody responds.

Alerts keep working even if one device fails

Two SMSEagle devices can work as an HA cluster: if one fails, the other takes over sending.

SMSEagle configuration

This integration will use Email To SMS plugin (see details: Email To SMS plugin). This plugin is included in each version of SMSEagle device.

  • Enable Email To SMS plugin in the web interface: Settings > Channels > Email > Email to SMS.
  • Create a forwarding rule in Automation > Email > Email to SMS. You can forward all emails to SMS or emails from specific domains.

To configure an Email action to send an e-mail to selected recipients when an alarm is received:

1.Start the Viewer with permission to configure e-mail actions (see Assigning Users to Groups on page 84).

2. Open the E-Mail Action Properties window (see Configure an Action Set on page 70).

3. In the Name box, enter an identifying name for the action—for example, UPS On Battery. This name will appear in lists of actions that can be assigned to events.

4. In the Description box, enter text to describe the action, if desired—for example, UPS On Battery.

5. In the To section, enter e-mail addresses of users to receive notifications:

a. Choose from a list of users by clicking the Select button to open the Nform Users Addresses window, below right. Select e-mail addresses from the list by placing check marks below the addresses you want to use—Pri. (Primary), Alt. (Alternate), SMS. Click OK.
Addresses are automatically updated for this action when changes are made to any
user’s email address (see Configuring Users and Groups on page 83).

b. Enter e-mail addresses in the Other recipients’ addresses box, separating each address with a semicolon (;) or press the Return key to make a new line.

c. Click the Send Test button to send a generic e-mail to verify that recipients are
configured correctly to receive alarm notifications.
The generic message is sent to all intended recipients with the word test in the subject and body. A separate error message appears for each attempt that is unsuccessful. Be sure to check that all e-mails are received.

4. In the Subject box, enter a subject for the e-mail by entering text or choosing fields from the drop-down list to the right of the Subject box.

5. In the Message Body box, create a customized message for recipients by entering text or choosing fields from the drop-down list to the right of the Message Body box (see the following table).

6. Uncheck Automatically send to recipient’s server if using Gmail or another SMTP server requiring authentication.

Wake-up Calls & Text-to-speech Calls (optional)

SMSEagle has a voice feature that offers wake-up calls for urgent ring-only alerts or text-to-speech calls to convert text alerts into voice calls. Complete the following steps if you want to add a follow-up voice call:

  • in the SMSEagle web interface: Automation > Email > Email to SMS edit the forwarding rule you created earlier
  • in the parameter “Call after sending SMS” choose a desired value:
    • Ring only: SMS will be followed with a wake-up (ring only) call
    • Yes – text to speech: SMS will be followed with a simple text-to-speech voice call (English language only)
    • Yes – text to speech (advanced): SMS will be followed with a text-to-speech voice call (better quality & multiple language support)
